Whatever Happened to the Fangoria Forums?

If you're not already familiar with Fangoria, you should get familiar with them, because they're probably the premier horror magazine in America. They started publishing their magazine in 1979, and if you had a complete collection in excellent condition, it would probably be worth a pretty penny--a warehouse fire destroyed the company's back-issue warehouse, so the only existing source of back issues is the vast number of private collectors. Fangoria has also hosted a number of horror conventions since 1985.

I was never a participant at the Fangoria forums, but I've heard that they were pretty active. I wouldn't be surprised, because they have a solid brand name and a lot of good quality publicity in the real world, not just on the Internet. That usually translates to an active forum community. But I visited their site today, and their forums are nowhere to be found.

What happened to the Fangoria forums?

When you click on the hard to find Fangoria forums link in their navigation, you're taken to a page with the following announcement:

The FANGORIA Forums are currently undergoing maintenance. In the meantime, we'll be on our Facebook page.

I've noticed that a lot of companies are spending more time focusing on their Facebook and Twitter presence instead of maintaining a forum presence, and I guess that's the wave of the future. But I still enjoy spending time on actual old-fashioned message boards. I spend a lot of time at Horror Forum, which recently had an influx of members who consider themselves refugees from the Fangoria forums. I guess that there's nothing anyone is doing at Horror Forum couldn't also be done on Facebook, and heck, we've even gotten some ideas for some forum threads from some Twitter phenomena, like the Six Word Horror Stories thread.

There's a discussion of what happened to the Fangoria forums at HorrorForum.com too--it's worth checking out if you want to read the reactions of the former forum members there.

And if you're just looking for alternatives to the Fangoria forums, here are some suggestions besides HorrorForum.com. (It's not the only horror movie forum on the Internet, after all.)

  • The DeadPit Forums - This one's hosted at Proboards. It looks like a pretty active forum, and it's easy to read and navigate, which are important qualities in a horror forum.
  • HorrorHound Forums - Horror Hound is another, newer horror magazine, and their forums are still live and active. Worth a look.
  • Cemetery Dance Forums - This one's not an especially busy forum, but it's operated by Cemetery Dance, a company that publishes a lot of really great special edition horror books. Worth checking out, especially if you're a reader.
  • Science Fiction and Fantasy Forums - These guys don't post a lot about horror specifically, but there's a lot of overlap between the horror genre, the fantasy genre, and the scifi genre, so this one might be worth taking a look at too, especially if you have broad interests. They have a specific Vampire Movies & TV Series forum, which I thought was really cool.

Whatever happened to the Fangoria forums is a little bit mysterious, but the more important thing is that a lot of the MEMBERS of the Fangoria forum are still online and participating in Internet communities. A lot of those folks are really active at HorrorForum.com, which has a lot of really cool subforums on specific topics like individual horror directors and horror authors. It's worth checking out.

And if you're really old-fashioned, try this Yahoo Group--you can discuss horror via thread email messages here: The Best Horror Yahoo Group.
